Certificate of No Impediment (CONI) for New Zealand Citizen

New Zealand citizen marriage should be registered in the country where it takes place. There is no legal obligation to have your overseas marriage registered in New Zealand. To be recognized by New Zealand law your marriage in Indonesia should be registered according to Indonesian law. Your Indonesian marriage certificate(s) will be acknowledged in New Zealand.

First step, you must apply Certificate of No Impediment (CONI) from Births, Deaths and Marriages of Department Internal Affairs in Wellington. Application form should be lodged to BDM office in New Zealand by Post or Courier or Fax. Please download the form from www.dia.govt.nz under “Marriage” section. New Zealand Permanent Residents (other than NZ citizens) require a Certificate of Search which is also issued by Births, Deaths and Marriages of Department Internal Affairs in New Zealand.

To apply for CONI :

    a. Please complete and sign the application form for CONI (BDM 189) with your own handwriting

    b. Please provide a copy of the details page of your passport

    c. If divorced, please provide original or certified copy of dissolution of marriage paper

    d. If widowed, please provide original or certified copy of death certificate

    e. The fee for CONI is NZ$122.60, plus bank charges if applicable. Courier fee (information can be found on the form)

    f. Payment can be made by Credit Card or please call BDM Office (information can be found on the form)

    g. Processing time is 21 working days in NZ not including postal time

After receiving your CONI from BDM office please mail or courier it to New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta or you may also request Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), New Zealand to send the CONI directly to New Zealand Embassy’s address to enable us to issue Consular Letter for Marriage. This letter is required by Indonesian Registrar.

Consular Letter for Marriage is issued by the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta :

    a. Please provide original Certificate of No Impediment

    b. Please provide a copy of the details page of your passport

    c. The fee for Consular Letter is IDR 440,000 plus bank charges and courier fee if applicable

    d. Courier fee is minimum of IDR 90,000 for domestic destination and for overseas destination, please contact the Embassy

    e. Payment can be made by bank transfer to the New Zealand Embassy account or by cash paid over the counter at the Embassy (Note: For payment by bank transfer must be from local bank account, please contact the Embassy for further information)

    f. Processing time is 3 working days (not including postal delivery time) after all requirements are completed and received by Consular Section of New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta
